2012 Miami Dolphins Team Awards Announced

MIAMI. FL – Defensive End Cameron Wake was named the Dan Marino Most Valuable Player Award, center Mike Pouncey won the Don Shula Leadership Award winner and punter Brandon Fields took home the Nat Moore Community Service Award, it was announced today.

This was the first time that Wake has won Dan Marino Most Valuable Player Award which is voted on by the South Florida media. In 2012, he started all 16 games and finished the year with 53 tackles and 15 sacks. Wake ranked third in the AFC and fourth in the NFL in sacks and also tied for the sixth highest single season sack total in Dolphin history. Wake joined Jason Taylor (two times — 2000, 2002) as the only players in Dolphin history to have multiple seasons of 14 or more sacks, having notched 14 in 2010.

This was the first Don Shula Leadership Award for Pouncey which is voted on by Dolphins players. He started at center all 16 games in 2012. In his career, the second-year center has started every game since joining the team as a first-round pick out of the University of Florida.

Fields took home the Nat Moore Community Service Award for the second time in his career. The punter was a co-winner last year with kicker Dan Carpenterand is given to the Dolphins player recognized for his involvement in the South Florida community. The winner of this award is chosen by the Miami Dolphins Foundation. In 2012, Fields participated in more events than any other player on the team and his commitment can even be shown during the offseason when he worked with the team’s Punt Pass and Kick finalist and gave her tips in punting at the Doctors Hospital Training Facility at Nova Southeastern University.

In addition to participating in team events, Fields created the Brandon and Katie Fields Youth Fitness Fund in 2010. With a focus on health, fitness and a positive attitude, the mission of the Brandon and Katie Fields Youth Fitness Fund is to promote physical activity and good health to children in the community.

MIAMI – The Miami Dolphins have signed running back Mike Gillislee, it was announced today.

Gillislee was Miami’s first fifth-round selection (164^th overall) in the 2013 NFL Draft out of the University of Florida. He played in 49 games during his career at Florida, rushing 389 times for 2,072 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also caught 23 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns.

Born November 1, 1990 in DeLand, Florida, Gillislee attended DeLand High School in DeLand, Fla.

SHOWTIME WINS MIAMI DOLPHINS FOUNDATION FISHING TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY SOUTH FLORIDA CHEVY DEALERS

Miami Beach – Chevy’s Showtime outweighed Cheesie Fishing by 22.6 pounds to claim the top overall prize in the 2013 Miami Dolphins Foundation Fishing Tournament presented by the South Florida Chevy Dealers. Over 80 boats registered for this year’s event with over 400 anglers participated in the tournament with the boats departing early Saturday morning from the Miami Beach Marina.

“We had over 80 boats and it was a beautiful day weather wise,” said Fins Weekend Chairman Jeff Peck. “We had a lot of big fish Hooters Weigh-In at the dock and we raised a great deal of money for our foundation that will greatly impact the South Florida community.”

MIAMI – The Miami Dolphins have signed tight end Dion Sims, it was announced today.

Sims was Miami’s second fourth-round selection (106^th overall) in the 2013 NFL Draft out of Michigan State University. He saw action in 39 games at Michigan State, where he caught 59 passes for 707 yards and two touchdowns.

Born September 18, 1991 in Detroit, Michigan, Sims attended St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Orchard Lake, Michigan where he lettered in football and basketball.

MIAMI – The Miami Dolphins have been awarded wide receiver Marvin McNutt (from Philadelphia) off waivers and signed fullback Rupert Bryan, the team announced. To make room on the roster, the team waived/injured both defensive tackle Chas Alecxih and wide receiver Taylor Stockemer.

McNutt appeared in four games for the Eagles in 2012, however did not catch a pass. McNutt entered the NFL as a sixth-round draft selection (194th overall) by Philadelphia in the 2012 NFL Draft. He completed his collegiate career as the Iowa Hawkeyes all-time leading receiver with 170 catches for 2,861 yards and 28 touchdowns after being converted from quarterback to wide receiver during his sophomore season in 2009. Born July 4, 1989 in St. Louis, MO, McNutt attended Hazelwood Central High School in Florissant, Missouri.

Bryan was not selected in the 2013 NFL Draft following his playing career at Florida International University. While he with the Golden Panthers Bryan recorded 43 starts at tackle which is the most starts by an offensive tackle at FIU. Born March 19, 1991 in Belle Glade, Florida, Bryan attended Glades Central High School in Belle Glade, Fla.

MIAMI – The Miami Dolphins have signed linebacker Jelani Jenkins, defensive back Don Jones and kicker Caleb Sturgis, it was announced today.

Jenkins was Miami’s first fourth-round selection (104^th overall) in the 2013 NFL Draft out of the University of Florida. Started 31 games at Florida and played in 36 total games during his career. Jenkins finished his career with 182 tackles (109 solo), six sacks, 17 stops for loss and six quarterback pressures and three interceptions. Born March 13, 1992 in Rockville, Maryland, Jenkins attended Our Lady of Good Council High School in Olney, Md. where he lettered in both football and track.

Jones was Miami’s seventh round selection (250^th overall) in the 2013 NFL Draft out of the Arkansas State University. A two year starter for the Red Wolves, he played in 26 games and recorded 128 tackles, two interceptions, one sack and one blocked kick. Born May 14, 1990 in Tuscumbia, Alabama, Jones attended Hazelwood High School in Town Creek, Alabama, where he lettered in football and track.

Sturgis was the second of Miami’s two fifth round selections (166^th overall) in the 2013 NFL Draft out of the University of Florida. During his career he made 70 of 88 field goal attempts which set school records, while his 70 made field goals also placed seventh on the Southeastern Conference all-time record chart. Over the course of his career he amassed 340 points which currently ranks third in school annals behind Chandler’s 368, and Tim Tebow’s 342 (2006-09).. Born August 9, 1989 in Boca Raton, Florida, Sturgis attended St. Augustine High School (Florida), where he lettered in football and soccer.

Miami Dolphins Take Part in Team Service Project

Hollywood, FL – Head Coach Joe Philbin and Miami Dolphins playerstook part in a community service project at Dave and Busters in Hollywood. Current players paired up with 100 students from Orchard Villa Elementary and Kelsey L. Pharr Elementary

“A big part of what we do is making an impact in the community,” said Head Coach Joe Philbin. “The kids had fun, the staff had fun and the players had a great time. Hopefully, a lot of the students will look back years from now and remember this day fondly and hopefully their interaction with the players and staff will make a difference.”

Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Darren Krein, Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach Dave Puloka and several players exercised with students prior to the event, while nutritionist Bob Calvin gave them tips to promote healthy eating habits.

“It was a lot of fun to introduce some of the activities that we do,” added quarterback Ryan Tannehill. “Hopefully, a few of them take it home and start a lifetime of being healthy.”

The students chosen were recognized for academic excellence, most improved, good citizenship, good attendance, and good behavior.

“It was great to be out here with these kids. I know we were excited to be at Dave and Busters,” said center Mike Pouncey. “We are still kids at heart, so we had a great time enjoying the day.”

MIAMI DOLPHINS REACH MORE THAN 1,400 CHILDREN IN FIRST-EVER YOUTH FOOTBALL PROMOTIONAL TOUR IN CAYMAN ISLANDS

Cayman Islands – More than 1,400 children from 15 different schools throughout Grand Cayman were impacted by the Miami Dolphins Youth Programs Department during a series of pep rallies as part of three-day tour this past weekend. This was the first time that the organization has conducted youth programs initiatives in the top Caribbean destination.

“The pep rallies were very exciting for the youth and staff of our area schools but most importantly, the message shared by the Dolphins was extraordinarily positive, echoing the values that we, as a country, try to instill in our children such as making positive choices, being active, and committing to education,” Director of Tourism for the Cayman Islands Shomari Scott said. “Collaborations such as this will enable us to share the spirit of the Cayman Islands with international visitors through the relationship with the Dolphins and their fans who come to participate in the camp this summer and we are excited to welcome these families.”

The pep rallies were a part of an innovative partnership with the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism that began in 2012 with the goal of spreading awareness of the islands as a travel destination, while also increasing knowledge of football and physical fitness amongst the Caymanian youth.

“To have the opportunity to make an impact on kids in an international setting is amazing,” Youth Programs Director Twan Russell said. “We want our youth programs to spread outside of just South Florida, so having this tour in the Cayman Islands is a great step towards that goal.”

The pep rallies included interactive events such as dance contests, question and answer sessions, a meet and greet with an alumni cheerleader, team mascot T.D. and giveaways. The Dolphins also presented their Dol-Fit program, which taught children the significance of education, physical fitness and positive choices.

(On the determining factor on signing with the Dolphins) – “When I was released and became a free agent, one of the first things that we wanted to find out was, who had interest. Once we found out who had interest, I sat down and I said, ‘What team do I think has use and is on the move upward in the League’ and Miami was right there on the top of that list and so we decided that this was the place for us.”

(On if he was given a vision of what his role will be) – “I do have some experience. I have been in the League for a while, but there are some really talented offensive linemen on this team already, so if they feel that my experience will help in any way, I am more than happy to do whatever I can.”

(On how surprising his release from Atlanta was and what the last month was like) – “Well it was very sudden when I was released. Unexpected. The month that followed was, with all that uncertainty, I’m a guy who likes to have plan and who likes to be able to have a vision, a clear vision for the future and I didn’t have that for a while. It was a difficult time, but I think that its going to turn out for the best and its going to be worth it.”

(On what makes him think that the Dolphins are headed in an upward direction) – “We made some big moves in the off-season and in free agency, the draft looked like it went really well, you never know but it seems like there is some talent. The young QB with a lot of upside and I just felt like we could make some noise.”

(On coming from a power offensive system to a zone blocking scheme) – “I think that I am going to fit in pretty well. When I first came into the League I was with the Broncos on the practice squad and that’s (zone-blocking) all they did and then when I came to Atlanta, Alex Gibbs and Tom Cable were the line coaches, so I know the zone-scheme and I feel like that I should be able to hold my own.”

(On if he is still the same player who made the Pro Bowl in 2010 from a skill-set standpoint) – “I’m a pretty tough critic on myself and I don’t feel like there has been much drop in my play to date, so I am just going to continue to take care of my body and try to continue to play at a high level.”

(On how much his past as an undrafted, practice squad, NFL Europe player play in motivating him) – “I always want to do well. That’s really my biggest driving force is to feel like I did the job that I was brought here to do, or when I was in Atlanta the job that I had there. I just want to do well, and that’s really my biggest driving force is success. I work to reach those goals and so far it’s been pretty good for me so I am just going to keep doing that.”

(On how quickly following his release did he hear from the Dolphins, did he expect this and if he has spoken to Brent Grimes) – “I haven’t had the chance to talk to Brent yet, but our wives are Facebook buddies and all that stuff, so I think that they have been in touch a little bit. Miami didn’t come into play until later in the process, after the draft. Some teams showed interest before the draft and then of course the draft happened and everybody changed their mind. So I was just happy when the phone rang and Mr. Ireland was on the other side.”

(On the slow developing free agent market this spring) – “I didn’t get into it until much later in the process than a lot of guys did, but it was slow. I think that the depth of the draft had a lot to do with that, I thought there was lot of talent and depth in the draft, so teams wanted to sit back and see what they wanted to do there before they committed to any free agent.’

(On looking forward to the home opener against the Atlanta Falcons) – “I am always looking forward to home openers. So it will be exciting, it will be good to see some of my friends and (former) teammates before the game and then after that we are going to try to put it to them.”

(On what the experience was like reaching the NFC Championship game and getting so close to the Super Bowl) – “It was disappointing. Last year in Atlanta I thought that we had a really good team, a special team. Offensively we were dynamic and to come up just a little short was disappointing.”

(On if he sees similarities in the Miami offense to the Atlanta offense) – “Well, over the past five years I’ve been in Atlanta we have had a young quarterback at the time and he turned out to be a pretty good player. We have a young quarterback here and he has the potential to be a very good player, and with the addition of some free agents, we have some guys that can take the top off the defense and have a vertical threat, run the football well. Offense’s if you can throw the deep ball and run the ball you are going to have a good chance, so I think that we have the chance to do both of those things really well.”

(On if he has a lot still left to prove) – “I am not here to prove anything to be honest with you. I am here to play football and have a good time and win. If I play well, then it will give us a chance to do those things. I am here because I want to be, I am here because I still like to play football and I think that I can still do it at a high level. So as far as having something to prove, I just want to play and have fun and win football games.”

MIAMI – The Miami Dolphins have signed offensive tackle Tyson Clabo and linebacker David Hinds after a tryout at the team’s recently concluded rookie mini-camp. The team also waived quarterback Clay Belton and linebacker Rob McCabe, it was announced today.

“We are happy that we have reached an agreement with Tyson,” said Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland. “He will be a great addition to the offensive line both on the field and in the meeting room.”

The 6-6, 329 pound Clabo joins Miami after spending the last seven seasons with the Atlanta Falcons (2006-12) where he was a 2010 Pro Bowl selection. He originally signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted rookie free agent on April 26, 2004. In his career, Clabo has played in 101 games, all starts.

Clabo started the final 36 games of his college career and a total of 37 contests of 47 games played at Wake Forest. He earned first-team All-Atlantic Conference honors as a senior. Born October 17, 1981, Clabo lettered in football and basketball at Farragut (TN) High School. A three-year starter on the football team at offensive guard and tackle, he earned all-conference honors as a junior and senior.

The 6-0, 226 pound Hinds played in 45 career games at Florida Atlantic University. He finished his career with 238 tackles, 4.0 sacks, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Born February 25, 1990, Hinds played at Miami Edison High School where he tallied 107 tackles, including 17 for a loss.

(On whether he was told there are certain expectations for him this season) – “No we’re just all rookies, all even just trying to come out here these three days and just try to learn. That’s just the main focus; see how we can help out this team overall once we get to camp.”

(On whether he feels that he stood out today) – “I don’t know, that’s up to the coaches.”

(On how excited he is to be a part of the Dolphins organization) – “I’m very excited. They took a chance on me and I’m blessed to be in this situation. I’m thankful for it and I’m going to give them my all.”

(On whether he wants to be a starter or take the process step-by-step) – “Step-by-step.”

(On whether he feels he can help on special teams as well) – “Definitely. You have to help the team any way you can, so if it’s special teams I’m on it. No hesitation, no complaining.”

(On whether there was a moment today where he thought we was now in the NFL) – “Probably once I hit this heat out here. I realized I was definitely out here and it was for real.”

(On whether he sees any similarities with this defensive system and his college system in terms of how defensive backs are used) – “We definitely have some similarities, but you know like I said it’s a lot of different terminology and lot more plays in the playbook. I think the coaches are just getting to know the players and things like that, just talking about it I don’t think it will be too hard to learn.”
